Abstract

Background:

Formal institutions, including secondary schools, are established to impart knowledge, skills, habits, values, and attitudes among the learners. The aim of the study is to assess the head teacher’s training and school discipline in secondary schools in Mubende district.

 Methodology:

The study was a descriptive cross-sectional-correlation study, conducted in 8 Government Aided secondary schools in Mubende district. The target population was 180 respondents, comprising 8 headteachers and 8 deputies. Simple random sampling and purposive sampling were used.

 Results:

Most of the head teachers (50.4%) had spent 10 years or more, 33.3% had spent only 1-3 years, while 16.3 had spent 4-6 years in the schools they are heading. Discipline in these schools was well handled. The majority of the respondents of 66.3 % with a moderated mean of 2.841, agreed that staff and students are given due consideration when it comes to discipline. 54(53.5%) of the respondents, with a high mean of 3.000, agreed that the school's rules and regulations are comprehensive enough to deter indiscipline. Most 48.5% with a high mean of 3.306 agreed that the schools have functional disciplinary committees for students and staff. The calculated average mean for discipline management was 2.951, which is a high mean.

 Conclusion:

Discipline in secondary schools in Mubende district was handled with most of the schools having functional disciplinary committees for students and staff.

 Recommendations:

The Ministry of Education and Sports should frequently organize leadership-based training, seminars, workshops, and refresher courses countrywide for secondary school heads to update them on new leadership situations and challenges.
